Mate relations define motion between mates to ensure assembly motion is validated during the design process. The Gear relation creates a constant ratio of angular rotation between two degrees of freedom. The Rack and pinion relation relates a rotational degree of freedom with a linear degree of freedom. The Screw relation constrains the rotational degree of freedom in a Cylindrical mate to the ...

If components are inserted or linked from external documents, a specific version or revision of that document must be referenced. Onshape utilizes icons that visually indicate which components in an assembly are linked from versions or revisions, as well as the status of those components. Assembly linear pattern automates the addition and positioning of components along a linear direction. Linear patterns can define up to three separate directions. Instances created by the Linear pattern are absorbed into a Linear pattern feature in the Instance list. I have trouble selecting and understanding the matter connector. Selection is often tedious, and understanding coordinate system of the little mate is confusing. During the selection of the mate, how do you stop it from jumping around. Is the direction of the mate icon significant?

    Instead of mate connector, you could have included a proper tool for datum coordinate system creation.

      Thanks for the feedback! I was making a lot of videos for this playlist, so for this one I was trying to balance "video length" against being "too repetitive". But I've gotten a lot of feedback indicating that the users would prefer a longer video, if it meant they'd be able to see all the picks and clicks (without speeding things up) so I'll definitely keep that in mind for future videos!

    I'd find a lot of value if you called out your mouse clicks and button presses as you went. I know it is arduous, but as a beginner it would help me taste success much more rapidly. Also, if you have any customized profile/mouse settings a guide on that would be worth a lot. Soo hard to continue to guess at your interaction methods and continue to dig a hole of problems. You're obviously a legend at this, so thanks for what you have shared.

    • @TooTallToby
      @TooTallToby 12 часов назад

      Sorry- The Pierce command can be really confusing at first! Keep practicing and I'm sure it will start to make more sense. One thing I always remind my students about is that the PIERCE constraint always take place between a POINT in the current 2D sketch, and a LINE or CURVE outside of the current sketch. Maybe that will help 🙂 Also - I created this Onshape tutorial, which has a free PDF training manual that goes with it: ruclips.net/video/GYkZmE_6MpY/видео.htmlsi=uyujZB5LygMj0aoI It may be helpful to have some of the steps in print to make it a little easier to follow along. Hope this helps! Toby

    Variable studio is interesting for dimensions that are easy to specify directly. But another option to define relationships between two components is editing in context in the assembly. That way you could have the horizontal geometry of the pin defined by the holes that are passing through the plates.

    Outstanding tutorial, Toby! I've been using 2D CAD for decades, but my only 3D CAD experience (if you can call it that) was a frustrating time with Sketchup. By following your carefully designed video, I was able to create the Stirling engine project with very little difficulty. I plan to use my new skills to design 3D models of woodturned bowls and other hobby projects. Thanks again for a great introduction to 3D CAD with Onshape!

    Toby, you are an amazing teacher! You have obviously put an considerable amount of work to produce this video, its companion pdf, and the OnShape project itself. But, in addition, your method of teaching is great. Other tutorial videos for complex software tools (such as GIMP, Adobe Studio, Inkscape, etc.) tend to simply go through all the tools and menu options, explaining what they do, etc. If you have a good memory, you'll know which one to use where when you work with the software yourself. Your approach is different, and so much more effective: You first show the need to do something, and then you describe the tool or option that satisfies the need. For me (at age 77) I know I will remember so much more of what you've demonstrated in this one video. I'm new to OnShape, and I'm so glad I found your channel. I followed this build all the way through, and learned a lot. I'll be looking forward to more. Thanks for all the work you put into these videos.

    Before watching, I did this myself. I'm a newbie so it literaly took me hours, but I got it done. Most of the time was spent researching how the features work. I started by making the flat face, then added the dome. Then I made the bolt holes, followed by the clearances. Finally I cut the dome to make the handle. For both the clearances and the handle I used the subtract feature. After watching this demo, I see how much simpler the whole process can be. I also appreciate all the hints and suggestions (like naming the features) Thanks a million. I know I'll be following your tutorials as I continue to learn. One question. Reading the drawings is pretty clear to me for the most part, but I don't understand everything. Is there a reference I can use that explains all the symbols and annotations? Liked and subscribed.

    I'm lost at the start, what are the key presses or mouse clicks? You don't explain the "features" you're using. I never get that pencil context box and the building the square from the centre out, I can only build from the origin, certainly not mirrored like that. A keyboard ocverlay would be super beneficial if you're not going to explain it
